Design and Test Results of the Vacuum Barrier for SHINE Linac

摘要Shanghai Hard X-ray Free Electron Laser (SHINE) is a 3 km long advanced X-ray source facility with high repetition rate. The main superconducting Linear Accelerator (Linac) of SHINE can increase the electron beam energy to 8 GeV under superconducting (SC) continuous wave (CW) mode. The legal entity of SHINE project is ShanghaiTech University, with one of the co-construction units Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI). SHINE Linac is mainly based on the seventy-five 1.3 GHz-cavity cryomodules which are connected in series in 1.4 km and operated in 2 K. As a trade-off between the effort to construct the Linac and maintenance during operation, it was decided that every 6 cryomodules (which is a length of 75 m) would have a separate insulating vacuum. In this way, by establishing a Vacuum Barrier every 6 cryomodules, the number of cryogenic connections to be done in the Linac during construction and the number of cryomodules sharing a common vacuum space could be optimized. The key designs focus on the barrier plate mechanical performance, on the heat loss consideration for cryogenic piping, and on the safety valves discharging capability taking into account the 6-cryomodule string situation. This paper thus describes the thermal-mechanical design of the SHINE vacuum barrier as well as the test results for the first prototype fabricated under liquid nitrogen environment. © Zhejiang University Press. 2023.
