Polymorphous Dimer Chain-Dependent Structural Evolution and Phase-Change Electronic Switching in Triclinic Vanadium Dioxide

Insulator-metal transition (IMT) in vanadium dioxide (VO2) near room temperature has attracted great interest in emerging phase-change electronic and optical devices. The IMT behaviors always connect closely to the evolution and distortion of vanadium-vanadium (V-V) chains in the VO2 lattice. It is essential but challenging to understand the dimer-chain evolutions in pursuit of the IMT origins in polymorphous VO2. Here, we presented the polymorphous dimer chain-dependent microstructures and corresponding IMT behaviors in the triclinic VO2 thin films. The decreased interplanar spacing and shifted phonon vibrations have been demonstrated and may originate from the variation of the periodic V-V chains in the triclinic VO2. We attempted to understand the evolutions of polymorphous microstructures and IMT behaviors in the triclinic VO2 thin films. The least periodic distance of V-V chain may be critical to determine the polymorphs and the IMT temperature (TIMT) in the triclinic VO2. We believe that such IMT and structural evolutions would be helpful for the understanding of the IMT mechanism in correlated VO2 and the construction of advanced phase-change transistors and optical devices. © 2023 American Chemical Society.
