A Current-Fed Partially-Isolated Three Port Converter with Active Mode Switching for Fuel Cell/Supercapacitor Hybrid Systems

o improve the flexibility of fuel cell/supercapacitor (FC/SC) hybrid systems, which are used in high power applications such as electrified transportation systems and renewable energy systems, the power converters between interfaces must be carefully designed. In this paper, a current-fed partially-isolated three-port converter (TPC) is proposed, which operates with pulse-width modulation (PWM) plus secondary side phase-shift modulation (PSM). The proposed converter features a current-fed input port to limit the current ripple, thereby extending the lifespan of FC. The proposed converter integrates a bidirectional inverting circuit and a current-fed full-bridge circuit on the primary side to provide a bidirectional port to the SC, so that the proposed converter can be actively switched and operated in single-input dual-output (SIDO), dual-input single-output (DISO), and single-input single-output (SISO) mode without port voltage constraint. Furthermore, the proposed converter incorporates soft-switching and natural-clamping techniques by adjusting the phase-shift angle and duty cycle. The operating principles, working characteristics and soft-switching performance are analyzed in detail. Experimental results of the prototype are provided to verify its operation and performance.
