Analysis, Design, and Control of a Current-Fed Three Port Converter with Soft-Switching for Fuel Cell/Supercapacitor Hybrid Systems

To improve the reliability of hybrid systems composed of fuel cells and supercapacitors used in high-power applications such as electrified transportation systems and renewable energy systems, the power converters between interfaces must be carefully designed. In this paper, a current-fed partially-isolated three port converter is proposed, which operates with pulse-width modulation (PWM) plus secondary side phase-shift modulation. The proposed converter features a current-fed input to limit the current ripple, thereby extending the fuel cell's lifespan. Furthermore, the proposed converter incorporates soft-switching and natural-clamping techniques by adjusting the phase-shift angle and duty cycle. The proposed converter integrates a bidirectional inverting circuit and a current-fed full-bridge circuit on the primary side to regulate the power flow of the supercapacitor interface. The operating principles, working characteristics, soft-switching performance, and control strategy are analyzed in detail. Experimental results of the prototype are provided to verify its operation and performance.
