摘要 | Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) is an emerging modality with strong potential in treating brain disorders non-invasively. However, the inhomogeneity and complex structure of the skull induce significant phase aberrations and pressure attenuation, which can distort and shift the acoustic focus, thus hindering the efficiency of tFUS therapy. To achieve effective treatments, phased array transducers combined with aberration correction algorithms are commonly implemented. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of current methods for tFUS phase aberration correction. A review was conducted by searching the PubMed and Web of Science databases for studies on phase aberration correction algorithms. Relevant information regarding principles of algorithms, refocusing performance, and more were extracted from the selected articles. A total of 54 articles were reviewed. The phase correction algorithms involve two main steps: acoustic field estimation and transmitted pulse adjustment. The review identified key benchmarks for evaluating the effectiveness of these algorithms, each of which was used in at least three studies. The benchmarks include pressure and intensity, positioning error, focal region size, peak sidelobe ratio, and computational efficiency. The performance of algorithms varied under different benchmarks. This highlights the importance of application-specific algorithm selection for achieving optimal tFUS therapy outcomes. This review provides a thorough overview and comparisons of various phase correction algorithms, which could offer valuable guidance to tFUS researchers when selecting appropriate phase correction algorithms based on specific applications. |
