Colloidal Quantum Dots in Very-Long-Wave Infrared Detection: Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities

The very long waveinfrared (VLWIR) is an electromagnetic wavewith a wavelength range of 15-30 mu m, which plays an importantrole in missile defense and weather monitoring. This paper brieflyintroduces the development of intraband absorption of colloidal quantumdots (CQDs) and investigates the possibility of using CQDs to produceVLWIR detectors. We calculated the detectivity of CQDs for VLWIR.The results show that the detectivity is affected by parameters suchas quantum dot size, temperature, electron relaxation time, and distancebetween quantum dots. The theoretical derivation results, combinedwith the current development status, show that the detection of VLWIRby CQDs is still in the theoretical stage.
