Dually confined Ni nanoparticles by room-temperature degradation of AlN for dry reforming of methane

A core-shell catalyst Ni@Al2O3/AlN was prepared in a facile and environmental way and used for dry reforming of methane (DRM). The Ni nanoparticles (NPs) were supported on AlN and encapsulated by Al2O3 overlayers, which were self-assembled via room-temperature degradation of AlN in moist air. Meanwhile, the nickel ions preferentially incorporate into the tetrahedral vacancies of the AlN to form strong metal-support interaction as demonstrated by theory as well as experiment. Based on the dual confinement effects, the stability of Ni@Al2O3/AlN catalyst was superior to that of the Ni/AlN and Ni/alpha-Al2O3, exhibiting negligible coke deposition and small growth of Ni NPs after 100 h time on stream (TOS) at high temperatures (973 and 1073 K). These results demonstrated that this green synthetic strategy offered a promising solution for preventing metal NPs migration and coalescence, especially for the high-temperature catalytic reactions.
